Well, tomorrow I'm picking the Charger up. I'm getting the 383 that's in the car. He told me that he'll let me get the 400 for $50 if I want it (but I told him that I wanted to take a look at the internals first b/c it's been in the weather...). The 440 that he has, he wants $500 for it, despite certain facts (as in, throw in a cam, intake and carb combo, ect........ it can be dropped in, and ran). So, instead of tearing down a good motor, and ect with that one, I'm gonna pass this one up (it's a later block anyway '7? later '70s that is, maybe out of a truck or motor home), and look for another one, for a lot lesser price. Anyway, here's what I'm wanting to do.
383 motor:
re-use crank and rods (fully inspected and such)
bore the block however much it needs, should be no more than .030
new pistons (light weight)
reuse existing heads (may do a mild port job)
aluminum intake
aluminum water pump and housing
Demon carb (from Jegs)
mechanical pump
which ever cam
double roller timing chain (Summit's set)
March Performance aluminum pulley set (performance underdrive serpentine conversion)
headers
Flowmaster 3" exhaust set up using Super 40's
and a few other things....
Now, the car is gonna be street driven, probably no track time. Not a daily driver, but I want something that's got some power, but not a gasaholic (yeah I know, it's a big block and and all, but I don't want 5 m.p.g., know what I mean)..... As for the car now, was a 400, now has the 383 in it, spec's on it are unknown at the moment, 727 TF auto, and 8 3/4 in the rear, I want to sat it's got 3.55's in it. By the way, as for the fender tag, the car is a 1972 Charger SE Brogham edition, and it is a triple black car. So, any questions, comments concerns?

well, I'd probably use the 440. A mild low compression version, with a smallish cam, would be just what you want for the car. It's no lightweight, and pulling a milder gear will be ewasier for a 3.75 stroke. Barring that, perhaps since you're doing the 383 anyway, add a 3.75 crank to it, and you have a similar power curve, in a smaller, lighter package. FActory heads are enough to feed them, same with manifolding...so why not? Price wise, the forged pistons needed, and the crank and associated work to it  (I'm thinking 440Source type stuff, not a factory crank) would add about $800 to the 383's build. Well worth it IMO.

Sounds like you have a plan for a solid street engine. BTW, you can figure out the rear end ratio. Count the number of teeth on the ring, then count the pinion. Then divide ring teeth # by pinion, if you didnt already know. What year is the Charger?

I went to 440 Source's website, I'm assuming that this is the crank you are talking about?
40037506760-6
3.750"
B
2.625"
 2.375"
 2.050"
 2300 Grams
 7.120"
 6 x 7/16"
 $499
At this website: http://www.440source.com/crankshafts.htm
Guess I might as well go ahead and look into new rods, I'm thinking of Eagle I beam rods... Since this isn't a Stroker, and nothing serious wild, I figure a little bit better than factory rod should be more than fine. I plan on running KB pistons:

That link should take you straight to the site that lists them with Summit Racing, if not, then here's the part #
UEM-KB162030-8

OK, I went to Eagles website and I guess they don't list I beam rods for 383????? But they list H Beam....... Any suggestions? Or should I just run the factory rods, with new bolts and fully checked, this is assuming that they all pass inspection, but if one fails, I'm replacing them all b/c you never know how far the others may be behind that one....
I looked at the Mild 383 build here on this site:
http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=16698.0
I like the way this looks.... Here's a few questions though that I have about it....
1: On the M.P. M1 intake, I've found 2 different designs, the single plane and the dual plane.... Which one would be better for what I want.... When I had my 440, I went from factory dual plane to the Holley Street Dominator single plane aluminum (I could tell a nice difference, then again, that wasn't the only thing)
2: Heads.... It says unmodified 906 heads, this is a budget build, unlike my other post which is just gonna take a little while how long is based on cost........., would I be better off going with an aftermarket cast head, or using these, and maybe porting them a little along with a polishing. The 440 that I know of for sale has the 451 heads (I think that's what it said, and it's one rough casting).....
3: The carb and cam seems to be fine with me, I had absolutly no problems with the Demon that I had on the 440, man what an improvement over the Holley #3310 that I had... And from what I've heard about Comp Cams, they are a good company....
4: Headers, no arguement.... But I think I want to run a 2 1/2" system instead of the big 3" system (both are dual exhuast with X pipe), either way, I think I'm probably gonna stay away from the Flowmasters and probably run Dynomax or something.
Now running the above crank, what kind of power difference might I see?

Here is one thing now that I've looked at the cam, I'm assuming that this is the cam that's listed:
Chrysler (big) 8 Xtreme Energy Hi-Lift XE285HL Cam
PART #21-228-4

Is this it? I ask b/c of the things that they recommend....
So..... who's got what to say, this topic was done by OldSchool, so I'd like to hear from you to about some of this... It seems like a nice build and all, but this will be a street only motor, and the cam looks like it might be a bit much?  :clueless: :1zhelp:

As for the gears, the reason why I say 3.55 gears is b/c I think there was a fender tag code on there for 3.55's, and from what I've heard, nothing major has been done to the rear axle.... but I'll have to figure that out a little later... The car is a '72 SE Brougham edition, triple black car originaly.

Here's some possible heads, these are listed bare, but what about these versus worked 906's? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=DCC%2D4529993&N=4294925232+4294838998+4294867081+4294866476+4294908110+4294840053+115&autoview=sku
