What a bummer
« on: July 27, 2006 - 07:46:00 PM »
I have had my '73 Barracuda in a shop for the body and paint work for almost two years. He's slow, but the price is right and the work seems good. It was within two weeks of coming home, then the St Louis storm hit last week. My car had been outside for a bit, but he saw the weather coming in and pushed it back inside. Then the (estimated) 60 to 70 mile per hour winds hit. Blew all of the windows out of the shop, part of the roof off and a tree down on the paint shed. When it blew the windows out, it peppered my car and 3 others inside. Now I have a grit blasted car, which will now have to be repainted. It had 2 color coats on (B5 Blue) and 3 clear, was buffed out, but the window guy hadn't gotten there yet to reinstall the glass.
Anyone else believe in MURPHY's Law? I sure as heck do...................... and he bit me in the butt again. I'd love to drive my car before the end of time, but at this rate, I may have to wait for the second coming.

Man that sucks, sorry to hear about that.  :-[
That is real sad especially when your hopes are up and it's that close.  :walkaway:

60-70mph winds aren't that strong, windows blown out at the speed is SUPER rare.
Was the shop either a POS or old?  :clueless:

We get those winds daily during Spring and much higher and no damage at all....just twigs and leaves falling off.

Hate to hear about this episode.....   :swear:   Any insurance on this type of occurance?   :dunno:   I guess the good thing is that at least the walls and roof remained intact and didn't fall in on you car...    :ylsuper:

When I mentioned the 60-70 mph winds, I was probably underestimating what really hit here. I'm not a weather guy, but I think we really got closer to 100 mph winds. The St Louis area had about 600,000 people without power and even now, (9 days later) over 10,000 are still out. Il looks like a hurricane or tornado went through and the imported electric company's are comparing the amount of damage to what Katrina left behind.
My guys building is old, and maybe that had something to do with it, but you wouldn't believe the damage around here. I spoke with a cop I know from the same neighborhood and he told me that he was watching the rear end of his full size pickup truck lift, and light show from under the tires during this storm. And, yes, I was incredibly lucky to have not had the car in the other part of his shop. I have no real structural damage to my car, just cosmetic, though there is a lot of that here. Supposedly, his insurance will be paying for the repaint.... though that is his problem and not mine. We already have that agreed on.
So, maybe, just maybe, I'll at least be able to bring it home before winter, then have time to get everything else in and working before next spring.

That is a bad deal. I live just east of Saint Louis in IL. and never had any rain or wind. Hope it all works out so you can get your Barracuda back.
