After pulling the driveshaft and rear tranny seal to replace the seal and fix a leak I was having, I discovered that trying to pound the new seal in while lying on my back was a pain, at best.

Rather then destroy the seal trying, I took it to the shop instead.

Anyway, the shop told me that they replaced the seal but noticed that it was still leaking. The guy thought that there was something wrong with the driveshaft yoke that was causing it. He mentioned a plug in the yoke.

I didn't even think that fluid entered the yoke at all.

Does this sound right?

To my eyes, the leak still looks like it's coming from the seal.

Yoke bushing seems fine, by the way. No yoke movement when it's seated in the tranny.

Yes there is a plug in some yolks that could leak , the 1 missing spline in the yolk is to allow fluid into the splines of the yolk to keep it lubricated

Gotcha.

I do remember seeing the missing spline.

What is the function of the plug in the yoke? Would there be any reason not to simply seal it permenently?

I take the u-joint apart and weld around the plug to make it solid.

That's what I was thinking. I can't ever see an instance where I would need to drain my driveshaft.

Well, not that one at least.  Heh.

Everytime I have put a new yoke in a vehicle I have brazed it in after knocking it in. Too much heat from oxy etc can crack the cast yoke later down the track.  :clapping:
