Ignition Fuse on Panel for Aftermarker Guages
« on: July 27, 2006 - 06:53:00 PM »
Hi,

I am adding an aftermarket set of digital guages in my 71 Cuda and the instructions say to connect the red power wires to an appropriate fuse terminal such as the ignition fuse.  I do not see anything labeled as such in the fuse block. Right now I have it connected to an accessory terminal but I want them to go off when the car is turned off. The car is not yet running but will be very soon so I am trying to plan ahead.  Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed, they mean the ACC terminal that you hooked to.  They are asking for a wire that is hot when the ignition is turned on and you found one.  It's just that it is also hot when you turn the key to the ACC position and want to listen to the radio.  If you would like a HOT only while the ignition is on, you will have to tap into one of the ignition switch wires that is hot in the ON position and OFF in the ACC position.  Use a test light to find one.

If you are worried about the current draw of you guages on that switch terminal, use a relay with an in-line fuse to supply your guages and have the ignition wire switch the relay on.  Let me know if you need a diagram.

Rob,

Thanks again for your help.  You seem to always have the answers for me. As long as the guages work when we fire the engine up for the first time I will be happy.

Thanks,

there is a Orange 3 wire connector near the right side of the instruments , plug into there & you not only have a fused wire but it will work with the panel dimmer to adjust the brightness

Thanks.

Right now I have the guage set sitting in the radio opening and it fits like it was made for it.  I am contemplating leaving the radio out and the guages in.  They are digital so when they are off you don't see anything but black.

Neil,  Thanks, I will go take a look for that connector.  The guages also have a separate purple wire for light dimming but for now I just connected them to the ground.
