Wild Goose Chases
« on: August 12, 2006 - 11:15:49 AM »
I just got back from looking at a 71 340 duster, owner said body was straight and no rust,HA!not a str8 or rust free panel.I've been on so many wild goose chases i lost count, but you never know until you look.Thats how I found my cars but I wish people would be more honest before i waste my time driving to look.I told the guy the I would be WAY upside down on value after pouring money into the car and having to replace every panel plus all the rust,he wanted 2500 for it,I wouldn't give 1000.I said it would be worth around 15k restored and wasn't worth it.He said they sell for 25-30k restored,I said your watching way too much Barrett-Jacksen .

I agree on that point there is a guy locally selling one for 18K and it is mint matching nos 4 spd etc.  Been on a few but usually no one is home.  They always have very little rust don't they!

They can lead to other things too...

I stopped for gas just down the road and one of the guys told me that Dave S. was looking for me, something about a Barracuda he wanted to sell. I drove over to Dave's and talked to him, he had a '68 fastback, very rusty and he wanted $500.00 for it. I went and looked at it, and it was too far gone to save but had a lot of good parts. Next to it was a 1970 Sport Fury GT, no engine, but it one of the 63 or so made with the 440-6. I went back and told Dave that I would be interested some parts from the Barracuda, but not the whole car. He wanted the whole car gone. I asked about the Sport Fury, and he said if you give me $1000.00 for it you can have the Barracuda. I did not have the money at the time, but I knew Dan in WA state would want the car, so I called him, he sent me the money and I had the car shipped to him. I parted the Barracuda out with the help of another Barracuda owner.

It also turned out that the Sport Fury GT was the one used in the road tests when new, it was coded for Public Relations and had some unique things about it that matched the photos from the road test.  :woo:

buddy is a bus drivaer and looking foa Camaro. This guy knows a guy who knows a girl who knows....etc. He takes 14 months and tracks down the car. A 78 year old women owns it, he sees it through a window, dust covered. Turns out to be a 69 firebird convert 400 ram air all original, 50k miles. She won't sell it. In that chase, we found a 68 camaro vert (keeping for his son), 3 rusted out but "worth a million" 69 camaros, a 69-302 chevy motor dz, a hemi cuda (not for sale but in a barn, a 427 cyclone ( a tree growing out of it), a 69 mach 1 428 which I almos t bought but it is a ford yuck and finally a good 69 camaro which my buddy bought, I did find and purchase a 70 Challenger, but e-bodies are harder to find than a needle in a haystack

Allmost more  :swear: is the thing when you go to look and buy a car but when you arrive its allready sold. The worst one was a 70 Challenger that the guy asked 10k for, the 400 motor was frosen he had taken the 4 speed out(and refused to sell it) and hide the 340 i guess(a real idiot), not to talk about all the rust issues, if feel sorry for a guy who bought it(he have been buying parts from me).

ive ben on a few, mostly local. a 73 "road runner" in a local barn, was advertised in a local paper. turned out to be a 318 satilite the panels that werent rusty were dented. an he wanted like $3500. i told him it was worth about $500 tops if i could drive it (he assured me it ran but i didnt hear it).
another local paper ad, a 74 charger (what i really wanted) "california car" "exelent cond" 400,2bbl (im a small block guy but ill go look) turns out it was a cali car 10 years prior and has seen wisconsin salt "a few times" it was rusty like it was a daily driven wi car all its life, and had ben hit in the rt rear qrtr. asking price was again $3500. both of these were in 1999 or 2000. when these cars were not worth that kinda change unless they were really nice. i would say that even at todays values neither was worth more that $1200-1500
