Anyone have experience with Moser or Strange rear ends?

I intend to swap out my 8/3/4 for either a Strange or Moser complete axle assembly. Does anyone have any experience with either? I am leaning to these units simply because the cheapest I have seen a Dana 60 for (rebuilt, ready to install) is $2500. Should I bite the bullet and go with the dana anyway, or are the others just as good/better? Thanks

I have a buddy that has a 71 challenger vert with a 69 date coded Hemi and he has the  Strange complete setup in his car. I really like it.
It is probably the toughest part of the driveline in that car.

I have a Moser 60 in the '71 Cuda.  It hasn't run yet, but the rearend has been flawless so far in terms of installation.  I had it build with a billet yoke, 4.10 gears, Detroit Locker, adjustable snubber, and aluminum cover.  I asked them for a B-body rearend but with the perches set for an E-body.  With the upgrades I did, it was about $2300 without shipping.  If I remember right, shipping was a couple hundred.  They had the rearend shipped and to my door in a couple weeks and they were a good experience to work with.

Both are good units
 Or you can use a Truck Dana & have it fitted to your car for $1200-$1400
 I have used Mark Williams axles in the past , they are the top aftermarket axle , but overkill for a street car

I have used Strange Dana rear ends in 2 high horsepower cars.  1 was a 65 Hemi Coronet race car and 1 is the Beast.  Both seem to be bulletproof.  I raced the 65 Hemi car for 3 seasons and never had any problems. It was very dependable.  The Beast has a very similar set up and seems to be the same way. Just my 0.02......    :cooldancing:

I have a Strange S-60 based rear with Strange S/S axles, Eaton Powerlock, 3.73, and Wilwood 4 piston w/parking brake rear discs w/ 10" rotors. I had DTS make it up to my specs (B body width - for my Chall w/ 3/4 relocation kit) with the perches loose. I talked to Strange themselves, Moser, and Mark Williams before ordering with DTS. DTS was the most Mopar knowledgeable (didn't have to explain what an E body is) and had reasonable backlog (2 wks) and accurate shipping quote. One of the more hassle free pieces of the Top Banana build.

Do you worry about whining? I tried every brand and 90% we got had a loud whine, not "just" a whine or a noise this was like having a supercharger whine outback, terrible. The only one we got that mad minimal to no noise was Yukon gears. I heard Strange & Motive crown & pinions were the loudest, after fitting both I concur.

Never heard a whine from the rear ends of either car..  Could be the 700-800 HP mills out front making too much noise though!   :smilielol:   :roflsmiley:   :cooldancing:

I got the Moser 60 3.55 gears and Wilwood brake kit.  Have installed under the car.  Sales are very nice and was shipped immediately 2 day turnaround rather than 6 weeks with Strange.  Price about 2400 with brakes & shipping.

Hemi install to take place this week - thursday - stay tuned for pics

I could be wrong but I talked to a few people that put strange rearends in, they say that they are actually dana, even have dana stamped on parts.  They had no complaints, not sure what the deal is, some think strange and dana have some kind of agreement, I dont know.  I know they're good rearends, but on my budget I run a Ford 9 inch, they're tough and fine with me.  Only broke one in my life but I think it developed a crack around third member cause I tortured it, off road and more!  I have had dana rearends in the past, and they're fine.  Right now I have a dane 70 with 4:56 gears, but its from a truck, would have to be narrowed, but I bet you wouldn't break it!

The Strange S-60 center section is a casting all its own. I don't know who does the foundry for them, but I guess it could be an OEM by Dana?? Stranger (no pun) things have happened.

Also to NZ's question about rear end whine - not from a properly setup Dana. The ring (crown) and pinion used can make a big difference however, as "race" R&P's use a different rockwell surface hardness (and possibly volute design) than "street/HD" R&Ps. The race parts are designed to cushion the violent forces of a clutch launch, and actually allow the teeth to "give" before failing. They will wear faster in a street use as a result, and whine like a 12-71 blower if you try to street them for very long.

Many have made this mistake thinking that the race part must be stronger, so go with it. For automatics and cars that see any street duty, don't use race-duty R&Ps.
