Trunk lid sound deadener
« on: August 26, 2006 - 06:11:37 AM »
I'm trying to make my ride as quiet as possible on the interior.  I've used about 50 SF of dynomat throughout the interior and it sounds really "dead", except for the trunk lid. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it not sound like a tin can when I open and close it or rattle when the tunes are cranked, yet still keep it stock looking when open.  That rules out the dynamat.  I've thought about using "Great Stuff" spray foam inside the access holes, but am unsure if that will create moisture problems or even if it will work.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated.

Great stuff is an open cell insulation and will cause rust issues. You really need to use something that will bond with paint the wont absorb moisture,I'm with ya on sound deadening,i plan on using a closed cell polyolafin sheet insulation(3'x4' sheets) for the inside(free since its one of the products i rep)but the trunk I am not sure,I would probably stick to spraying or something you an slosh around the inside of the trunk lid.I think I am going to try gas tank sealer, there is no easy way to get in there unless you split the trunk lid, which i wouldnt want to do that. The thing i dont like about dynomat is it can absorb moisture. You might even try thinning a truck bed coating and slosh on the inside of the lid,I may try that also since its just in primer at this point of my resto.

Here's what I've found all over my Challenger. When the former owner sand blasted the car, it blew out or loosened up all the body smuts. The glue type stuff they put in like caulking compound, between the inner and outer shells of the trunk, hood and center roof suport. Without it the panels have way to much flex and your gona sound like a rattle trap. Check to make sure both sides are still stuck together. It's cheap and easy to replace.
I like the idea of great stuff, even though it's open celled. Just make sure you get the nonexpanding or you in for a surprise. Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

Actually we used to Rep this company, and switched to competitor for market reasons(The on we have now doesn't make the sheet material, only pipe insulation).I took all the samples when we dropped them .I used it in my early Bronco(sold it a few years ago) and it really deadend the sound, especially in the tingy sound of the metel hardtop.I plan on using it on my GC roof.It wont absorb any moisture, its closed cell and comes in several thicknesses. Its kind of like a tight very small bubble wrap you get in shipping boxes.I am not sure it its the best choice for foot traffic because under extreme useage(years of getting in and out) it could eventually get flattened but i am going to use it on my floors as well since my car will be rarley driven, you can make that descision. Here's the website, you may find some plumbing, insulation or plumbing supply wholesalers with it in stock. http://www.imcoa.com/Imcoa/ImcoaSheet.asp
