1970 Challenger
« on: August 21, 2006 - 05:56:33 AM »
Hi. After going 26 years since I last owned a Challenger(a 1971 and a 1973) I have a chance to buy one. It is a 383 auto with a 391 gear. It is an "N" code a car. its a  #2 car with great paint needing a few minor fixes on it. Nice aftermarket wheels.NO RUST! good deluxe interior with woodgrain, 150 speedo, console/slapstick. good glass, grill taillights. Underside detailed. This is not a concours correct car but a well detailed street cruiser with 35k original miles. Original mat in trunk. good dash pad goes with car. Engine compartment is nicely detailed with a hood insulator. Ceramic headers with a stainless exhaust with custom made stainless quad tips exiting thru a stock non R/T valance cut like a 'cudas for the quad tips. Mechanically needs nothing with the engine and trans being rebuilt last year with a stall converter added. Most of the trim is good. The underside is painted orange and is detailed. He wants 25K for the car. A fellow car buff turned me on to this site and to ask you guys your opinions on this. please feel free to respond. Thanks. Gary

It's tough to say without seeing pictures of it first, but the price sounds like it's in the ballpark.

That's probably about the right price for a 70 RT.  Is it a numbers matching car?  Would love to see some pics if you have any.

By the way, welcome to the board! :grinyes:

IF I took pics of the car and posted them here you would see a show condition 1970 Challenger with a mint engine bay. Pics can HIDE the minor flaws it has( a lot of ebay buyers will attest to that!). I will take pics of the car and post them here when I get them in the next few days when I see the car again. The paint is GLASS smooth including the engine bay. I'll have him put the car up on one of his hoists to see the detailed underside and take pics of that too. The engine bay is excellent and the engine looks brand new and nicely detailed. Visualize a nice orange Challenger with no badging with a bulge hood with nice Cragar Mag star wheels and a nice stance. I would not hesitate to put this car in any non concours car show  and I won a concours gold with my 1970 shelby Mustang convertible and I am a stickler for detail and this car is detailed nice. 2 reasons I didn't take pics of the car was my son had our good digital camera out at MIchigan Itl speedway on sunday and the car was filthy from being driven in the rain the day before in the Woodward Dream Cruise. Like I stated before I would call this car a good #2.  How do you post pics in your messages here? Do you host them elsewhere first? where?  Thanks. Gary

when you finish typing you message click on the additional options button just below the text box. Super easy, just make sure the pic is small, there is a 300kb limit.   :2thumbs:

If it's as clean as you described, I'd say its well worth the money...especially if it turns out to be a numbers matching car.

I'll post pics of the Challenger just as soon as I see it again hopefully in the next few days. Here is a pic of a HEMI Challenger a friend of mine owned and sold a few years ago. I wanted to buy it but he worked with the ORIGINAL owner and bought it. A numbers matching original paint car. I'm sure a few of you have seen the car in person somewhere and can attest to the horrible quality control Chrysler had back then. Gary

Ok guys. I talked the owner of the Challenger today. I kinda confused how some of the facts got mixed up on this car. The car has a 440 in it so it is not matching #s. The underside is Orange front to back and detailed. He had the car back in storage  so I couldn't see it. Being a mechanic who used to built custom cars and street rods(he finished the hot wheels "twin mill" car when they got the unfinished car from Boyd Coddington for Carron industries), he went thru the challenger front to back and all mechanics are done right and correct. He said he searched all over to get the correct parts necessary to make this car right. I have seen too much junk over the years and I can tell you this car looks like it was done right. He is wavering on selling it  because his wife and 2 teenage kids don't want him to sell it. He let his daughter take the car to high school last year(something I would never do) and his son wants to drive it when he turns 16(15 now). He wants to get it appraised before he sells it and says the 25k is nonnegociable-but are not all cars that are"not for sale but..". Is the car worth more with a matching #s 383 over the non match 440? Is it worth 25 k now with the 440. He insists its not an R/T car. I think he thinks it may be worth more.Again I will post pics when I see the car in person even if I don't buy it. Gary

If the car runs good and it is restored, 25K is a fair price.

Well I guess I wasted my time guys and will have to start searching for another ebody. I was told that they feel the car is worth A LOT MORE than the 25K he originally said it was worth earlier in the week. They said they went "online" and  that the car was worth a lot more. Does anybody know where they could have gotten info like that? I think the owners like the ones on this web site would be as well versed as anyone as to the value of these cars. Real cars selling on the internet I found seem to support these poster's views. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. By the way I put off looking at a Boss 302 Mustangs to look at this Challenger and the guy has since sold the Boss this past week-oh well. This guy is a restorer (who had the boss)and he tells me with the price of paint and materials that to have a car stripped, disassembled to repaint and  repainted to show specs are running around 10k these days.My opinion the paint issues and top fender dent on the car require a repaint. Thoughts on repaints? thanks. Gary
PS anyone near Detroit have a 1970-71 Ebody for sale????????????????
