Another head ID question...
« on: September 03, 2006 - 07:06:54 PM »
Still doing the inventory on what my '70 Cuda has or has not...

It still has the original motor, but the heads have me baffled as to whether they are original or not.
I've read numerous posts and casting ID charts, but can't determine if these are original.

3418915A,  date is 05040 (what the heck does that mean?), 360 J casting with 2.02/1.6 valves

Car is a BS23H0B built Jun '70

Nice heads by all accounts, but anybody have any further info?

Thanks for the help.  I've found plenty of lists like that.

They say that:

68-71 340 should have 2531894 X heads (2.02 x 1.6)
71-72 340 should have  3418915 J heads (1.88 x 1.6)

The 360s also used 915 J castings as did the T/A heads.

The internet "experts" say:

"X and J mean nothing, both 894 and 915 castings could have an  X or J".

"J heads were ONLY '71 and later and ONLY came with 1.88 valves, the
T/A heads being the ONLY exception"

"No your wrong, I have personnally dun seen early 915 castings with factory 2.02 valves"

"Mopar says they never made them like that"

"I DUN SEEN UM"

"no yer wrong, I'm right" ad nauseum...

In any case the "A" suffix makes these early J castings and from a few other posts I
figure that the date code 05040 is May 04, 1970 which matches the June 6 build
date of the car.  Whether or not the 2.02 valves are original is anybodies guess.
Any way to tell if they've been machined larger?
