Crumby rod cap stamping
« on: December 25, 2008 - 05:52:42 PM »
When I tore the '71 440 apart that's going in my next project I didn't pay much attention to the rod cap markings, now when I'm cleaning things up I find the rods are marked pretty well but some of the caps are maked so poorly I can't match them to the rods.

When I have the rods reconditioned can they take care of this when they bore them or should I find another set of rods and not worry about it? this engine was bone stock and untouched, I can't believe they stamped them that crappy but next time I'll be looking.

it is relatively easy to sort out , slide the cap on the rod & if you feel any ridge where they meet you habve the wrong cap , they can also be saved by resizing them

I've also seen oldtimers match them up by the hone marks, they're kind of like fingerprints. As CP said though, if you're going to resize them don't worry about it, the resizing process will take care of any mismatch.

we just match them up as best i can then machine cut the cap and rods and resize them again. Sometimes i have to do a few 2 times but then they are good.

Your lucky to even have some markings on them not all were marked.   :iagree: If you are resizing anyways I would try like cp says to get them close and then mark them again and resize them and there will be nothing to worry about.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I can't believe this is common, I'm mostly familiar with Ford and AMC and they're marked very clearly.

This is going to be a six pack engine for my Bee, the one we built for my Challenger I found a set of six pack rods for but it isn't really worth the effort is it? it's just going to be a 450 hp street motor.

No, it's not common. I've never seen a Chrysler motor that wasn't clearly marked. 6-pak rods are great if you want to go slower than you will with the standard rod. They are total overkill. Sell them to somebody who thinks they are worth something.
