70 Cuda fastener questions
« on: September 02, 2006 - 04:08:46 PM »
Some odds and ends...  Mostly odds...

First two pictures shows the hood scoops.  RH scoop trim insert was held in with
screws through the front into lead anchors.  No nuts on the back posts.  Posts
were clean and had never been threaded.

LH scoop has been primered.  Insert had no screws in the front holes,
scoop is undrilled for lead anchors.  Insert held in place by pal nuts on
the posts.  How were they normally mounted?  Could it be the LH was
replaced from a different model year when they were using different
methods?

Last pic is rear valance hardware.  Is this original?  A 1/4" stud into a tinnerman
nut on the valance itself and then installed with a flanged nut?

My Cuda hood off my 70 has never been apart and shows no holes for the insert at all.
So I don't know what's holding it in place.  :dunno:

I think the flanged nut is probably wrong, but maybe someone else knows for sure.

Not much help for ya.

I did some searching here looking for an answer and came up with two posts.

GCC found the same on his '70 vert...

<<<The inserts on these hoods have a diecast piece approx. 12" long and 1" wide with 2 attaching studs that attaches to the main body of the hood insert.  I have two sets of these that appear to be factory, but they mount differently.  They both have the 2 studs, but one set has small screws mounted from the front side, and little round nuts on the back side.  Is this possibly a difference between '70 & '71 hoods, or did some hack add these??  Thanks, J->>>

Steve mentioned this in May '05

<<<Speaking of factory mistakes, did you catch the article in this month's MCG on the untouched '70 'cuda? One of the hood inserts was put together with screws through the front of the inserts and the other side was done with studs on the backside.  Could it happen? Yes....did it? Sounds like a good mystery to solve.>>>

Because one was in primer I assumed it might have been replaced, but upon closer inspection there is burnt orange paint under the primer, so it is original to the car.  One of the posts stated it was a diference between '70 and '71 model years.  Mine was built late in the '70 model year.  Sounds like the factory had scoops with and without the lead inserts for the front screws and they installed mixed pairs.

Cudahob, on your hood did they blackout the scoop behind the open holes in the insert or does the body color show through the hole?

I remember that artical in MCG, thanks for the insight.

I'll have to investigate further; I think I understand what your saying, but there are no holes in the insert on mine.
The paint has peeled off and it looks like a solid insert, with no form of screw of rivet.

I'll take it apart tomorrow, maybe I'm not seeing it.

Stay tuned

Anyone else know?

Ok, I guess for '70 they had inserts with no holes and just mounted them with a nut on the back post.
For '71 they had holes drilled in the inserts and a corresponding lead shield in scoop.

My car has inserts with holes and only one scoop with the lead shields.  One mounted each way.

Over the years i have seen them mounted both ways and i dont beleive the year has anything to do with it but im not sure. But to be honest i have never seen a cuda have to different ways of mounting then they are normally the same.

Thanks for the help cudahob, although you didn't need to take your car apart.   :)

It's possible the kid who owned it 15 years ago changed the inserts.  He liked
to hit the swap meets and buy small parts for here and there, although I can't
imagine why those inserts would need to be changed.  The scoops seem to be
original though and show the two different mounting methods.
