WIW - 440 and 383 engines
« on: October 03, 2006 - 02:17:03 PM »
Hi guys,

I spoke with a customer today and he asked if I would be interested in two engines he has sitting in his parents garage.  One is a 440 short block from a GTX for which he has most of the parts for. The other is a complete 383.  Both are late 60's-70 vintage.  Any idea what they are worth?

I really don't need them but if the price is right you never know. :clueless:

Ed,

That's a tough call. 383's aren't bringing much. Next to a Hemi, the 340's and 440's get attention. It would help alot if you knew the blocks were good and not cracked. You also don't really need a locked up engine.  Do you like to gamble? Low-ball him with an offer of $400-500. What the heck? If you don't need them, no loss here.

Get the VIN's if you can.  Lots of people looking for their missing motors!
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I think this may warrant a trip up to his parents house to take a look. He said he would get me numbers off the engine this weekend so we will see what we are dealing with here.

He said the 383 was a replacement engine from the GTX which originally was a hemi that he blew up. Yeah, I know, he is still kicking himself over that one. But back then, insurance costs dictated a lot of things.

the GTX would be a steel crank HP block assuming it was the original engine , it should be worth $4-500 asuuming it is usable, the 383 maybe 2-300

I have been looking for a F-383 HP motor. If it is the right date code I may be interested if you want to resell it.

JS27,

What do you think you would want to pay for it.  The guy said make him an offer.  If you are interested I will play middle man here. I really don't need it but I hate to see a good motor sit and rot.  Just let me know.

Thanks
