a-body performance build delema

i have a 67 barracuda and refuse to go slow. however at the same i want to drive the thing on a daily basis, so gas economy is a factor. i have 2 ways to go:
1. performance small block(the best one for gas economy, i think, will b the 318 with the 360 intake valves)
2. mild big block ( i can get a 383 block for $50 or a 440 with 727 for $500)

any and all input is greatly appriciated

how fast do you want to go, and how much money do you have to spend? Is it a slant? small block car already?

I think if your going to drive it I would build a 360..Ive got a duster wuth a 380hp crate engine an 4 speed that gets upper teens to low 20s on the hiway an still has more than enough snap on take off. I am runing 2.76 gears, but with an OD trans and good gears it would be in the same range on the hiway. A BB Abody will drive like crap on the street.  If you go with a mild 360 or a 318 you could run a 999 trans with the lockup converter. they arent as durable but would make a good cruiser with 2.23 or 3.55 gears and a more mild small block.
