Charging problem
« on: September 16, 2006 - 07:00:58 PM »
Alternator is not charging on my `69 Barracuda and I can`t figure it out.It has been converted to electronic ignition but still running the one field wire alternator.Alternator and voltage regulator checked out good.12v power to ballast and voltage reg when key is on,power to other side of ballast when key is on start.Continuity between voltage reg and field at alternator, good ground at voltage reg and engine to body.Jumping the field wire to 12v or jumping the voltage reg wires gets sysytem charging but plugging the voltage reg plug back in and nothing,we are stumped!   :clueless:  The alternator needs a signal to the field to charge the system but for some reason it`s not getting it and all I can figure is something is wired wrong.

Do you have a solid motor to body ground. On my 73 Chally ith is accomplished with a braided strap from the R/H valve cover to the firewall.

#1- SINGLE Field alt needs a single feed reg- or a single feed electronic reg.-looks the same as the old mechanical ones.

#2- dual feed reg-always electronic- blue and green wire unit- to a dual feed alt.

a single feed alt will not properly work with a dual feed reg- even the newer electronic ones.

so.... the electronic unit you have- is it the newer triangle plug reg???? if so- you can't use it for the old single  feed alt!!

I do have the newer triangle plug voltage reg on there. So I still use the old mechanical one or which electronic one will work?Or can I just use a dual field alternator and if so what do I need to do for wiring?

I checked Advance Auto & there are plenty available but you will have to change harness to old style, a little on the pricey side too. Year one didn't state if solid state but based on price it must not be.

sounds like you have the newer 2 prong tri plug and the old single feed alt.

you need a dual field alt to make things work!!!!!

wires to alt should be... larger black wire to output stud, green and blue wires to the field terminals!!
