V-code 440+6 block (1970): To HP or HP2 or not?
« on: September 23, 2006 - 09:37:42 PM »

I am looking at this date coded block for my car, it is 3 months earlier from the build date of the car.

I keep hearing conflicting theories on HP and HP2 440 blocks, some say they were merely shift differences, HP being day, HP2 being night. However my question is, why would CHrysler care about making a engine block stamping such as HP with a shift denotion?

I always get this question when people see my car, "Wow, does it have the original HP2 block?", I say no it has a HP, and they seem to think it is not correct for a V-code six packer.

Any true V-code owners attest to the fact they have a HP block or is it all HP2? Maybe for 1969, but I'm more focused on 70-71's.

Thanks in advance!

:iagree:
I am sure it was a quality control thing, they wanted to know if the night shift was sleeping on the job, lol. There is no other evidence supporting any other claim that the HP(2) was anything special.Hype in the market comes from the inexperiance of people that really dont know, like the countless times people have told me they had a 440 Hemi when they were young,I dont think we need to ask if this was true.

A note about the "Series D" line above before anyone freaks out. The D is not right for 1970, somehow when the new TSB was issued they did not change it to E. I have seen occasional mistakes in the TSBs.
