wipers
« on: September 20, 2006 - 05:07:04 PM »
I have just fixed my wipers on a 1974 Barracuda. The wipers when shut off stop wherever they are. They don't park like modern wipers. The motor is a 2 speed. Does anyone know if this is normal?   Thanks

Are you sure you have a parking motor?  Is the switch grounded?

Mine does that also, now they decided to stay about 1/3 of the way up and I can't get them to go down...even with force.  I think I will have to pop them off and re-position them and hope that works....I hate taking off the hood!!@!

They should slowly reverse to a parked position when you shut off the switch.  Check the resistor on the motor to see if it's working(ohms).  My car is at body shop but someone must know the resistance of this part.

Are they getting caught up on the lower chrome window plate? Be carefully to as it could be making your wiper motor work overtime as don't they have a "cut off" when they're in the park/off position?

It's not getting caught. It does seems after some time that it was scratching the glass on the wind shield some what. I pulled up on the arms a little and they don't seem to be putting as much pressure down on the glass and replaced the wipers that were on the car. I have the car in the shop but I will double check the connections and the ohms. I have attached a page from my shop manual and a 2 speed motor does apparently have the park feature. Thanks for the responses its good to know your're not alone.

The 2 speed motor uses a park cam that extends wiper travel when the motor goes in reverse. If someone installed wiper linkage (under the cowl) from a variable speed wiper setup, it wont have the park cam installed.

Does your motor reverse directions when you turn the switch to the off position? Watch it and let me know.

My plain 71 Challenger, which came with the 318, had the 2-speed with a park position.  I have since had to replace it with a rebuilt unit and it also had a park position.  So your motor should also have one.

Ii haven't gotten my car back yet from the shop. I'll see if the wiper goes backwards when turned off.
