Please help; Shifter question
« on: October 03, 2006 - 09:13:54 PM »
Hello guys.  I'm pretty much a dumbass when it comes to Mopars, so that's why i'm here for your expertise.  My father has hinted that he would like a Pistol Grip shifter for his '74 Duster with a factory Plymouth/Dodge 4 speed tranny.  However, the places I have searched (summitracing.com) lists them for Mopars but it states that they are for Hurst shifters.  I don't think his shifter is a Hurst (it looks like a stock Plymouth shifter).  Is there anyone out there who makes a Pistol grip for a stock 4 speed?

the 74 Duster should have a factory hurst shifter mechanism & there are a # of sources for the pistol grip handles , the 71 B body bench seat will fit the best in an A body

Thanks guys.  So which one of these would you suggest? http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=115+320173

Do I really need the whole shifter, or do I just need to buy the handle portion that will attach to the top of the stick?

Thanks Chryco....

I will bother you with one more question:  Would the easiest way to tell if the car has a factory Hurst shifter mechanism be to pull back the shift boot and see if the stock stick attaches with the stacked two bolt pattern?

Also, just looking at the stick in his car, it is a round design (whereas the pictures of Hurst sticks appear to be square in appearance).

well the side of the shifter will have the hurst name on it, the A bodys had a round stick & the hurst pistol grip is rectangular
