    Numbers matching question

    I'm a newbie to Mopars and I'm wondering how much value should one add for a numbers matching car as opposed to a replacement engine of the same year and size? I'm talking on a 70-71 RT challenger for instance. I'm looking for a car yet and I know it matters but I don't know how much.

    For a numbers matching car I usually add (on top of a non-#'s car) about $10,000 for 340's, 360's and 383's, $12,000+ for 440's and $15,000+ for 440-SIXPAKS and $25,000+ for HEMIs. The R/T cars (383ci +) add the full $10,000 IMO and usually plus dependent on options and rarity.

    I doesn't really matter too much, I own a #'s 70 Challenger R/T and a clone 340ci 73 'Cuda.
    I love both!! At the end of the day it makes no difference to how they drive, does it?  :grinno: They're just #'s.

    Get what you want, if your after something original and for the show scene a #'s car will do you well.
    If you're after something to drive more and enjoy and not worry about so much a non-#'s maybe your best choice.

    Thanks, I knew it made a difference but that's more than I'd have thought. I'll buy a car  with or without matching numbers as long as the price reflects it.

    I'd say the diff between a #'s car and a non-numbers car is appox. 20%. Thats a good ballpark figure to use.

     So would NADA Guide reflect numbers matching or not? or is it in the middle so you'ld  you add 10% for matching and subtract 10% for non matching?  they don't say.

    AMX,

    It all depends also on what your long term plans are.  Are you buying it as an investment or something cool to drive. If this is your first venture into Mopar-land you may want to consider buying something you can afford and enjoy. They all are going up in value so I don't think you will lose money on whatever you buy.

    I see what you're saying and no I'm not an investor I just want to know if a car is priced right when I find it. I'm more of a show -driver type guy. I found a 70 RTSE 383 4spd restored to near mint original condition with a non matching engine number for 40K, I haven't seen it in person yet but is that about right? it sounds in the ball park.

    That sounds a little high to me, "mint original condition" sounds like it's no show piece, maybe solid but for a 383ci non-numbers I would have expected a little less, not by much, but a little less.

    Then again the price game is almost impossible without photos.  :picture:

     I think I kind of gave a bad discription, it has a fantastic new PPG paint job and top, new leather interior, new engine and transmission, brakes . all done by pro's. the only thing I see it needs is a little trim buffed out and the bumpers are nice but I'd rechrome them. under the hood is detailed to the max , new wheels, tires 3" exhaust ect. I said near mint because of the bumpers and trim . it may be a little high yet I'm not sure?, I'd rather do more of the work myself but solid complete car projects are something I just can't find.

    That car sounds about right to me then, sounds lovely. I'd offer lower anyhow, ya never know!!

    Projects are cool, if I had the know-how I'd take one on myself but no more cars for me (house) and the two I have were too nice for me to "learn" on. lol However, buying one new has one big advantage, you save HEAPS of $$$$.


    Hope you find what you want because it sounds like you know what you're after which is a good place to be.

    I will have about $40K into my 71 Cuda resto project when I am done and I still haven't driven it down the street yet. So if the Challenger turns out to be as nice as you think it might be worth a shot.

    Any chance of posting some pics of this baby?

     The pictures I have are in a weird format but I'll see what I can do, it's F5 red with a black top and interior. I tried hard getting him down on his price and he won't budge.  the owner is on vacation until Thanksgiving so I can't go see it until then. if I don't find something else first that is.
