Cowl black out ?
« on: May 24, 2007 - 04:00:05 PM »
I know this has been talked about on here before and I thought it was determined that only the high impact colors came with the cowl area blacked out.  I met an original owner of a FE-5  '70 Cuda who still owns the car though now it's painted black he swears the cowl area was blacked out from the factory. is FE-5  considered a high impact color? or could have been done anyway? I'm just questioning his memory. if it is supposed to be black would it be flat or satin?  my engine is out and this would be the perfect time to correct it if needed.

I could be wrong but it was my understanding that blackout depended on build date.

I have an FE5 70 that is not blacked out and when I was having Galen do decoding on the car, he was nice enough to call me after seeing the VIN picture with the car apart to let me know to blackout between the dash and the window since if you don't do that you can see red when looking down at the VIN and the blackout on the cowl topic came up and he said mine was built too late and to do the other approach.

Note, the glass guy took care of blacking out the concerned area on his own when putting the glass in so I didn't have to worry about it in the end.

What the date is I don't know but my build date is April 30th.  Hope that helps.

Should be blacked out.
Black primer or Organosol.
FE5 is not a high impact color.

I thought it was the color itself that dictated blackout? All light colors were to be blacked out while dark ones were left alone.

Mine is black down in the vent holes and what few bolts that are on top of the cowl are black so it makes sense, sounds like nobody can say it's wrong so I'm going to do it. if anyone ever finds out when excatly they stopped it that would be interesting to know.
