Transmission Cover

I can't believe I haven't seen this since I bought this barracuda about 6 months ago, but I rolled a new work light under the car from the front to see how well it lights, and could see what looked like a large gear about where the trans and motor connect.  Isn't there supposed to be what's called a trans cover over it?  If that's what it's called, how do I find the right one?  I have a 68 440, and I don't know but am guessing its mated 727 with it?

Why would someone not put that on?  Maybe the 440 and 727 are different years and they don't line up?  Maybe the TCI 3500 stall converter?  How do I figure out what's the right thing to do?

It's gotta be a bad thing to not have that cover on, right?  Thanks.

The 'large gear' are the teeth that the starter grabs to whip the motor around. The cover should be for any 727, check ebay...

The 440 and the 727 will be the same as any other, converter should have nothing to do with the plate. I've only worked with 904s, but if its the same...you only need to remove the starter and a couple bolts to get it in there. And it is wise to have it there, mine is missing the little inspection plate, fell off at some point...but no where near as open as it'd be without the entire cover.

A big block is the easiest to put on, no starter removal, four short 1/4 inch coarse thread bolts.

often a performance converter with the smaller bolt pattern will interfere with the cover which may be why it is off
