1965 Dodge Challenger II Idea Car
Challenger or Charger…Charger or Challenger, a lot of people confuse the names of these two cars. I’m sure you’ve seen it before in hot rod books and magazines; it happens all the time. What about Chrysler? Do you think they got the two names mixed up also? But how could they; were talking 1965 here. The Challenger didn’t come out until 1970. Look at the 1965 New York World’s Fair Guide Book. Look at the list of Autofair exhibits Chrysler had on display. Did you find it, “the exciting DODGE CHALLENGER II IDEA CAR (2)”? Wow, Did Chrysler actually have a Challenger concept car in 65?
Well, I did some research and found that in 1965, Chrysler did have an “Idea Car” (what we know today as a concept car) at the New York World’s fair, but this Idea Car wasn’t a Challenger. It was the Dodge Charger. This car was on display, along with the famous Chrysler Turbine Car. So, how did Chrysler confuse these two names when they advertised it in the 1965 Official Guide to the New York Worlds Fair? Good question! The only thing I could think of was that Chrysler, at the time, wasn’t sure what name they were going to use for this “Idea Car”. So, when it came time for Chrysler to place an advertisement in the Guide Book, someone got the names mixed up and called it a Challenger…or was it the other way around? Who knows? What do you think? Any input or suggestions on this issue would be appreciated. I’m going to email Mopar Muscle with this information hoping they can find an answer to this intriguing question. Enquiring minds what to know.
