Clutch problems...
« on: July 23, 2003 - 08:01:19 PM »

My dad went to take is '73 Chally out to emissions this afternoon... he got in and when he hit the clutch, the pedal dropped half way down, then, trying to push it in, it was very stiff... stiffer then it's ever been... he managed to drive it there and back, but it was giving him problems the whole way... the clutch was dragging on the engine.... he got it back home, and I got there to see if there was anything we could do... nope... we let it cool down then he fired it back up to put it in the garage... seeing as he had been losing gears... he only had 2nd gear to play with... stoomped the clutch in, and forced it into 2nd... he started moving and we heard this 'Cuchunk'... and he then no longer had any gears...  :o :o

Any suggestions as to what it might be... all the linkages look to be ok... but something has to be messed up inside... I'm thinking it's the clutch piston (if there is such a thing...)... I've heard something about those, or similar going out...

Thanks!

LB

the center hub of the disc may have broken , I gues s you will find it as you now need to take it apart anyway

So a trans rebuild is really the only solution?? This may sound stupid... but you have to pull the engine to get the trans to come out, right?? ??? ??? The only engine I've ever pulled was my slant... and that was coming out anyways...  ::)

Use a Good clutch [not a Centerforce] & a new release brg , rebuild the shifter probably needs grease after 30 years

It`s all hype & advertising, they release funny , often stay released under power if you try to shift fast , I have seen the discs scatter as well & you cannot adjust the spring pressure by changing springs like the B&B style

LB, i dont think much of centerforce either. Only because there is no resistence in the peddle. Its like sticking your foot in a bowl of mashed potatoes ::) Just doesnt feel like a clutch should. Just my opinion only.

I used a McLeod clutch and preassure plate in my first Cuda, a real strong 340 4 speed. I abused the heck out of that setup and never had a problem with it!
