Vin On Block
« on: October 24, 2006 - 04:50:48 PM »
My cousin is looking at a 70 Cuda 440 6 Pack on ebay.Should there be letters in front of the numbers stamped on the block? This car has numbers on the pad but no letters. Were some cars stamped with only numbers on the pad.

Front top of the engine next to the dist. should be "F 440" and below that it should have "HP"

The VIN is found down by the oil pan and it will have two letters followed by the last 6 VIN numbers.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Do you have a picture?  There should be 8 digits (2 letters and 6 numbers).   What are the numbers?  Are you sure you are looking at the VIN stamping block and not the casting numbers?

Cody, there are no letters by the oil pan just the vin numbers.

Sorry to jump in here.  :-[

There are numbers are down by the oil pan? I didn't notice any numbers on my 440 until I removed the passenger's side header. It was on the side of the block. Of course my car isn't numbers matching, so I only noticed it was a 68, or 69 casting. So these numbers are down by the oil pan too?
I didn't mean to jump in here.  :misbehaving:

Here is an example of a 1970 440HP VIN stamping (on the machine pad located just above the oil pan rail on the side of the block). 440 Six Pack and 440+4 barrel bare engine blocks were the same. The second picture is a typical upper Identification pad as marked for a 1970 HP engine (for either 440+4 HP or 440+6 engine)

Typically "A" means the engine was assembled with 20 Over cylinder bores and typically "B" means the engine had 10 under main & rod bearings.

I thought the maltese cross identified 10 under rod/main bearings?  :clueless:
