Extra holes in rear frame rails?
« on: October 12, 2006 - 11:15:09 PM »
Somebody cobbled up an exhaust system for my '70 Cuda and it was hung from straps screwed to the front of the rear frame rails.  I have three 1/4 inch holes at the very front of each rear frame rail, some on the bottom, some on the sides.  Can anybody tell me if there were any holes of that size there originally?  I'd like to fill these, but can't remember if there was a brake line or fuel line clip or something along there that I may need a hole or two for.

Any way you could get a pic of what you are referring to as the front?  Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have any photos of my car on my comp. since I had to reformat it.  I'd snap some pics for you of my '73, but it's 5 hours away.  Anyone else have any ideas?  I'd have to check mine before I could make a valid response.

I know the 73 frames have different holes than the 70.  I found that out when changing one.  I think I can get to a 70 Cuda and take a couple of pics.  Then you can see what should and should not be on your frame.  This car here has 50,000 on it.

Lets start with these 2.  If they don't work tell me what you need to see and I'll get a pic.

Thanks for the pics.  I just got to my deployed location in the Middle East.  To hook up my computer to the base network they had to wipe the hard drive and install the approved operating sytem.  Couldn't access my favorite website without submitting a request to the network administrators.  I guess they found the content here mundane enough to allow me access from here and I was suprised that I was able to access it this morning.

The area I was talking about was the very front of the rear frame rails, (toward the front of the car) where they curve into the floorpan.  The car had headers and about three feet of straight pipe into econo mufflers just hanging underneath the car.  They had them hanging from straps at that location and there are several 1/4" holes drilled there.  About three on each frame rail.  I was just wondering if there were any holes of that size there originally, if not I will fill them.

Just fill them.  The stock hangers were bolted on with a plate being on the inside, hidden by the rear seat back. Sometimes you'll only find one one the passenger side.  Some of the other hangers that I've seen, have a funny "T" shaped plate with 2 rubber hangers, bolted to the shock crossmember.

It sounds like someone at a muffler shop just drilled a couple of holes to hang a custom exhaust.
