7.25 to 8.75 conversion - need new spring shock mount plates?
« on: October 29, 2006 - 04:06:53 AM »
Replacing the 7 1/4 with an 8 3/4 diff and the axle tube is bigger diameter and will need to get bigger u-bolts.  Therefore I suppose I need new rear spring shock mounting plates as well?  Can someone confirm that there are different sizes available and where to buythe right ones??

Also, while I'm on the topic of the axle conversion, will the brake assembly be a straight swap from the 7 1/4 to the 8 3/4??

You definitely need bigger plates. Some genous had the 7 1/4 plates on my car. They ever so cleverly bent the U-Bolts to fit into the shock mount plate holes.  :swear:   :horse:

OOPs, that option was discussed this morning as a potential fix, as was extending the holes in the plate to take the wider u-bolts :-[
If only parts were more readily available here it wouldn't be a drama.

Anyone have an answer about the brake swap????

That is the best news.  I was just about to ask that, thanks Chryco.

Also for the mounting plates, you may want to check this website (cheaper):

Thanks for the info guys.  Good news about the brakes too

I have some old plates coming that are off a Dodge Phoenix which was sold here in Australia.  Sight unseen but description sounded close so will just have to wait and see - otherwise the Mancini plates look like good value.
