Rear end whine

I have a neighbor with a 72 340 Challenger. The rear end had a whine to it so he purchased and installed new axles, new thirdmember and has not been able to get the whine out. He is an old timer but now is wondering if he didn't tighten the pinion nut enough. I am getting him a torque wrench but since this was a pre-existing condition I think there is something he is missing. I am a novice when it comes to diffs any suggestions for the whiney rear?

Could be the cut of the Crown & pinion. We tried several brands some louder than others, some like having mini-superchargers in the rear end. Finally got one that is as quiet as Santa coming down the chimney. You could try calling Randy's Ring & Pinion and getting a Yukon gear set. Motive are one of the loudest, you may have them?

 I find that it the Bearing in the Rear end and you got to make sure that you use the right amount of shime between the bearing and Housing, try replacing them with new, Chev are know for that whinning

Richmonds are in mine,(4.30's) I had two other people beside me experienced at setting rear up ends  check the pinion depth and pattern , pinion depth was exactly what Richmond wanted and it still whined when I got it back in. It will be whining when I get it back on the road again I'm sure. :dunno:

Whine is generally caused by the mesh of the gears being wrong , if they are used gears & were run set up improperly you will never get rid of the whine without new gears , the crush sleeve just controls the brg preload & unless the pinion will move in& out the brg & shim will maintain the pattern & should not cause a whine

Mine were brand new Richmond gears ,all new bearings set exactly to Richmonds specs and double checked by two experienced guys.  :dunno: :dunno:

Also can depend on the gear ratio (if it is a non-hunting gearset-even number of pinion teeth into even number of ring teeth-), what ratio do they have? and is it a factory gear? A buddy's challenger they owned since new with 4.10s made noise. Richmonds in my car made some noise too, also in another car I had as well - both were set to spec. Also, when does it whine?
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

This is a hell of a long shot in the dark, but did u ever consider the noise may be coming from the trans, when the planetaries get worn u will have a whine in a 727, or a bearing in the 4 gear., which will dimminish with each higher gear change.

I agre with CP...I've installed Strange, Motive, Precision, Yukon, Richmond, and one old set of Zoom...lol. 8 3/4, Dana 60, Dana 44, 8 1/4, GM 12 bolt, GM 10 bolt, Ford 8.8 and 9"... Set up properly, they will not whine. Regardless of ratio, or manufacturer. I have seen one bad set of gears. From Precision, and they were 3.00 ratio for a 9". (I  rebuilt a ton of rears working at a 4wd shop...lol) They were just barely audible in a perfectly restored '71 Mustang. The guy would drive with no radio, and the windows up just to try to hear noises. It took 2 sets and more than 3 times in and out of the car to get a set he was happy with. I wonder if the gears were really bad, or his ears were really that good. My boss had to ride with the guy with him driving, to get it to make the noise. It's also imperative that the proper break in procedures are followed. 15 minutes on the jacks at steady cruie of around 40mph. Then, park it until it's totally cool. Then, 2-5 mile drive, with very light throttle and coast...then park and let it cool down. Then if it's all set, I drive about 10 miles or so, going med to light throttle and coast. After that, beat the tar out of it :burnout: :bigsmile:

I saw the receipt- everything is there, over $1014 from Randy's Ring & Pinion. The whine is between 35 and 60 and the concern he has is he is not sure he got 175 foot pounds on the pinion nut. He had to guess and cheat over 100. Will double check that tomorrow. He was sure it was from the rear, I had asked about the trans especially since it whined before...

There are quite a few reasons the noise may be there - first thing to check is when the noise actually happens - on pull (accelleration) or coast, or both. This may give you some indication about the cause. Mine whines badly on coast so I'm pretty sure the bearings have not been adjusted properly. If it's gear noise, it changes in pitch and volume as the speed changes as opposed to bearing noise which doesn't change much with changes in speed.

He thinks bearing noise...pretty constant 35-60
