There is a pad in front of the valley pan adjacent to the distributer that sometimes has what body the engine if for stamped on it. I had trouble finding it and had to scrape some paint off to read it clearly. Mine was something like this:

J 440 T
3 22 2

The first letter is the year. (J is 72 or 73, I forget. A 68 should be a B I guess since they debuted in 67. Not sure.) 440 is obviously the engine. And T is supposed to be the body, but I don't know what T is. Perhaps "truck" One of my 440's didn't have anything after the 440.

The 3 22 2 is the month, day, and what number engine made that day.

I have a '73 with a '68 440HP in it.

I've gotten by by just telling them it is for a '70 Challenger if it's for an engine part, ie, belts, gaskets, fuel pump etc.

Much easier than explaing the engine swap every time.

All they need the application for it to input on the computer. 440 parts are 440 parts... for the most part.

 :iagree:

 I agree with Grec.

If you tell the service people you have a later year E-Body with a big block, they blow a head gasket.  My 70 440 has electronic ignition which they don't understand either.  :smilielol:

hey guys/gals i am still stumped on the belts i think i have to hoses figured out but anyways...... is there anyway you could tell me what pulleys are connected??? for instance 68 440 does the power steering-crank-alternator-and water pump all run off the same belt?? Should my crank pulley have 4 runners or just 2 .......it is an A/C car but right now the A/C is not hooked up..... the car ran before i took it apart but now i dont know how the belts went back together.... is there a difference between a 68 440hp and a 68 440??? if not grec can u tell me exactly what belts run what items?? or if anyone has a picture that would be great...... any help would be appreciated this is the main thing keeping it from running.....

Is the a/c compressor installed? THat will make a huge difference. With the a/c compressor installed the crank pulley should have 4 grooves. 2 grooves for the a/c compressor and alternator, 1 groove for the power steering pump, and the last groove is for the water pump and idler pulley. If there is no compressor, then the crank pulley will have 2 grooves, ans the water pump pulley will be deeper than the a/c water pump pulley. There will be 2 fan belts in that situation, 1 for the power steering and one for the alternator and water pump. I understand the problems youa re experiencing with the local auto parts stores. Mine don't even have a listing for cudas with anything larger than a 383 in their system, and then they argue with me about it, when I have the car sitting in their parking lot. Hope this helps.
