440 stroker kits for cheap?
« on: November 15, 2006 - 06:16:33 PM »
I received my Mopar Collectors Guide today and in it was an ad for a company whos website is www.440 source.com they offer 440 stroker kits for only $1200. Has anyone used them before. Do they offer quality products, by the description of the cranks alone it appears that they offer a quality product.

I bought a pair of connecting rods from them and they were of high quality, but like any other manufacturer I would get them spec'd by a machine shop. The machine shop that did the balancing on my engine said they were impressed by the quality of the rods for the price, but I might have gotten a good set. I also bought my dampner, timing chain & gear, and some other stuff from them and all those items were high quality too. I do not know how well they perform because I only have the shortblock built and havn't finished my new engine yet......

I got my 512 kit from Brandon at 440 Source, everything checked out good, still need to do a little work before it gets balanced but everything measured good other then honed the small end bushings which should be considered as normal anyway.. :2thumbs:

I also dealt with Brandon and Natalie at 440 source. I bought the 4:15 crank and the I beam upgraded rods. My machinist said everything checked out great. He had to do some work on the small ends of the rods but nothing big. They have a stroker kit right now for like $1199.00. My machinist said he thought the crank could have been an Eagle and the rods, Manley. The pistons were from Ross. Here's some pics. Mancini Racing has some good deals too. The only problem I've come across is finding roller rockers  :dunno:

No kidding  :lol2:  $1800.00 plus for the rockers. More than the crank and the rods. It was nice 440 source had some Hemi stuff too.

The parts are not Eagle or Manley. They are offshore parts, but Brandon is one of the few who listen and respond to MOpar builders in terms of journal sizes and such. Depending on the machinist, some will say it need work, some will say they are fine. I've used several kits, all needed something, mostly rod reworking. But, the crank dimensions as shipped tend to be on the smaller side. So running it with a rod on the bigger end of the tolerance can lead to too much clearance. Also ,the chamfer for the oil holes tends to be very tapered on the journal. In one case, I've seen pics of it extending almost totally accross the bearing surface. That should be carefully inpected. In any case, unless the crank needs to be turned and polished to the next smaller size, there is no reason not to use them. And if that is the case, Brandon will ship a replacement for you. Even spending a little to fix them, it is a great deal on some decent parts. I have a 505" kit being ordered this weekend. That will make 4 from him.
