Flexible Exhaust.
« on: November 16, 2006 - 10:51:37 AM »
I am thinking of putting a header on my Ford Truck 6cyl. (my wife gets the Challenger) and have heard of flexible exhaust. Has anyone used this and what are your opinions? Where is a good source? How was it to work with and how long have you had it on you rig?
Thanks

Are you talking about the accordian(?) looking exhaust that bends to fit??? I have no problem with it other than it probably has a lot of turbulance and it isnt the correct way to do an exhaust....

WOWSA!!!

I learn more everyday.  :22yikes:  This seems too good to be true. I can see it being a short term answer, but can this really last for the long haul?   :dunno:

It is junk. I used some after I got a fix-it ticket as a kid for no tail pipes. It started coming apart within two months and was rusted through after six months.

Could you be looking for a stainless flex sleeve?  Company van, Ford Aerostar, has one stock 100k+ & no problems.

I used the stuff that Rev pointed out, many, many moons ago.  I think it was from JC Whitney.  Maybe 20 years ago.

I used it to make side exiting exhaust on an '81 5th Ave.  It's like fused spiral steel.  If you don't grab hold of enough of it when you clamp it down it'll unwind itself.

It did the job I wanted, being a teenager with little money to spend.  (Hey, now I'm an adult with little money to spend  :smilielol: )  This was a cheap way to do the exhaust without getting custom bent stuff.

It's not very forgiving as regular exhaust pipe is rigid, this isn't and the weight of itself pulled off this flexible tubing as I was driving in the winter.  I had to crawl under in the snow and slush and pull off what ever was left of the exhaust since it was dragging on the road!

Like Barry mentioned, it doesn't last very long.  It could work if you used short sections or longer sections with more exhaust hangers.  It doesn't bend at very tight angles.  It will be prone to leaks at the seems after a while is my guess and MAY not pass a state inspection depending upon where to live.

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I have some of that as the exhaust pipe for my old Ford tractor.  Its been on there a few years with no problem, but I don't use the tractor much.  I can't imagine using it on a car though.

For anything other than a quick fix, it has no place on a decent car.  Besides questionable quality, the spiral surface creates mucho turbulance and back pressure.

it is like any flex pipe, duct, etc.
it will cause a great deal of drag, friction, etc.
It will not work like your original system is supossed to.
Now will you SEE a difference, I can  not say but the
engine may very well feel it.  If you could go to a
slightly larger diamiter, it might help commpensate
but truth be told I would avoid it.

do you remember when people used to take Mailbox/house number letters and put their names on the side of their cars, oh and their girlfriends, or their nicknames....
Well I would put flex exaughst in the same line.

Thats what I love about cold, gray Michigan--So long as you can drive pass the cops like everybody else they leave you alone. We have no test and no government guys or anybody ever looks at your ride. Now that flex pipe I would not use but if done right , it work--for a while. The auto store by my house has them and you can buy 1.5' or3' even 10' long. Sure it does not flow the best but it flows much much better than those darn cats. these new cars have. We used to have "test pipes" but the clean air act got rid of them but we still have flex pipe.

They do make a HP ones that are much stronger but the only come is short  pieces and they cost $30-$50. You can also get stainless steel ones for something like $30 for 10' or the cheap ones for like $15 for 10'. Hey we are still 20 miles from Detroit what do you expect.

I haven't seen that stuff in years, didn't know they still made it.  We had two airboats when I was growing up that had VW engines swinging 4 foot props.  That's what we used for the exhaust.
