How do you install offset UCA bushings
« on: November 19, 2006 - 03:13:23 PM »
I'm wondering if I should use the offset UCA bushings when I rebuild my front end?  What is the advantage?

What position should they be installed?

Thx

Maybe this pic is less confusing.  Are the UCA's supposed to be "pushed" out (top bushing), or "pulled" in (bottom bushing)?

There should be arrows on the bushing, just point them in the directions as shown. Arrows towards the outside of the car in the front and arrows inside towards the engine on the back..simple then go get your alignment done. Do you have power steering or manual steering??

I have power steering, wondering if there's a way to tell if I really need these, without getting an alignment?

When I put mine in years ago, I put them both in to both point to the outside. I couldn't get enough CAMBER into my alignment till I put those offset bushings in. What they did was put my upper ball joint farther away from the car.  You really don't know if you need them till the shop gives you a printout.  If you make friends with the alignment guy, maybe they can give you a checkout to see if the old bushing will adjust enough to give the correct caster and camber settings. If they don't, then they can tell you which bushings have to point a certain direction.

I understand what you did, this gave you more positive camber.  But the tech pic above indicates these are for caster?

It sounds like these can be used for variety of problems, I thought it was 1 specific issue (which I still don't get)?

Thx

They are mainly used to increase positive caster. So you install them staggered to move the ball joint rearward over the lower ball joint. Because you are using offset bolts to adjust, caster, camber, and toe will all be affected by any adjustment or the installation of those bushings.
