are all 360 blocks created equal
« on: November 18, 2006 - 03:54:18 AM »
does anyone know if all 360 blocks use the same deck heigth or if some years used different ones? I have a 71 360 block that I transfered the crank/rods and pistons from into a 74 block and I now have my pistons sitting at a different heith than they did in the 71 block. The pistons in the 71 block was down in the wholes .015 but now moving them to a replacement 74 block they sit .085 down in the holes?????  anyone seen this before

No, but I believe it. Sounds like smog stuff to me. Thats to get the compression down even more. That seems like a lot to mill away. I do know some guys like a zero deck.

Hey Outlaw, the rod bearings are suppose to go half on the bottom and half on the rop not both on the bottom! LOL, seriously, I don't know what that one could be unless they changed the deck height on the later years, dunno.  :dunno:

71 360s had the best blocks
technically the decks were nto altered as the same intake fits But it is not unusal to see a lot more meat on later blocks

Factory deck height meant "make it flat". So you can have anywhere from .010 to as much as .040 difference between two individual blocks. I know of one case where the deck height side to side was off (from each other) by .025". The '71s used the 340 sand cores, which had to allow for a 4.04 bore. So the resulting 4.00 bore had extra thick walls left behind. Truthfully, they are all similar until you hit Magnums. If there is a question, have it sonic checked. With bad core shift boring more than .030 over can be hazardous in later than '71 blocks.

Somebody educate me please. I had never heard of a 360 before '74, What were they used in prior to '74?

The 360 replaced the 340 in 1974 for A B and E bodys but they made them from 1971 and came in everything from Police cars to Motorhomes

Most were 2bbl versions but they still had the good heads and rods but all have cast cranks

Nothing wrong with the later 360s, they just have thinner walls
