Distributor question
« on: November 29, 2006 - 02:06:46 PM »
My father and I was looking in a junk yard and we found an 84 Dodge Ramcharger 2wd with a 360.  The distributor has dual magnetic pickups and we have not come across this before.  Why is it a dual setup and would it be worth using on another car?  He is only asking $10 for it.

1.The dual pickup can be used in a race car without a start retard box.  One pickup is used while cranking, then the other one takes over when you release the starter switch.

2.I use one for a fuel injection setup, where one pickup is used to send a signal to the injection computer for a tach signal, the other pickup is used for my Ignition control module for spark timing.

That distributor does not have any advance weights or vacuum advance built into it and the pickup plate is locked.  It wouldn't be worth anything to you unless you are a MAD SCIENTIST, like me.

Thanks for the info.  Which car are you using this distributor on?  What type fuel injection are you using?

it is a Lean Burn dist all the advance was controlled by the computer so with a SDS or Mega squirt system it would work fine , without a computer controlling advance where you set the timing is the only place the timing will ever be regardless of RPM or load

I use that dual pickup distrubutor on my test engine running the Megasquirt fuel injection computer.

In my Challenger, for cruising, I run the Edelbrock Pro-Flo fuel injection tha comes with it's own distributor. It's good up to 550 HP with it's 35 lb. injectors.
