Is it normal for sure grip to make clinking noise?
« on: September 01, 2006 - 05:56:15 PM »
Hey guys (and gals if there are any of you out there), I have a 1974 Challenger with a 3.23 sure grip rear end.  I notice when in forward or reverse at very low speed (like less than 1 mile per hour) and especially when turning, I get a clinking feeling, noise and actually see the rear wheel girate a little.  Is this normal;  ie. does it just do this because one wheel is turning faster/slower than the other, or do I have a potential problem?  Thanks everyone.  Charlie

Sounds dumb, but did you check for proper fluid level in thje rear end? Either way, I wouldn't drive it until you have it checked out, because you might wind up throwing an axle. Bad news at any speed.

Clunking noise, particuarly when turning could just be low fluid level.

u are possibly starting to have a problem, but u can prolong it by changing the oil and adding the friction modifier, this will allow the clutches/cones to slip when going around turns.

I had the same problem with mine during the restoration. I changed out the rear end with a 489 case and did not add the friction fighter after adding the fluid because the auto store was out. The problem would occur just pushing it into and out of the garage. After adding the friction fighter, the problem went away.
