Stupid Small Block Question #248
« on: December 15, 2006 - 01:10:48 AM »
Are the timing covers from 91+ 5.9L magnum small blocks interchangeable with LA blocks?

I'm almost at my wits end trying to retrofit this serpentine system with my air gap manifold... The accessory bracket from the magnum covers the heater hose port on the manifold, and the magnum water pump has an unthreaded heater port that I can't seem to plug.  I'd like to have the denso alternator and the serpentine belt, if theres an alternative bracket to the standard 95 dakota one, I'd like to know about it.

Anyone need any 95 Dakota engine parts?

I was thinking the same thing, but I just did not want to be the first to reply.

as I recall the bot pattern is exactly trhe same but all the accessories & mounts are different , for example the water pump is reverse rotation with serpentine belt & the alt is the smaller Nippondenso

Thanks, I'll try it out later this week.

Just to clarify, Im willing to give up the denso and the serp for the convenience of the LA accessories.

I ran into a nasty gotcha trying to swap the center sump LA style oil pans with the rear sump magnum pans.  The rear opening on the magnum is narrower than the LA, so the LA pan has a 1/4" or so gap at the rear crank. I've not been able to find a center sump magnum pan (supposedly in the van version of the 5.2 and 5.9) yet, may have to do some fabrication.

the LA pans had 2 different sizes at the rear , the smaller LA 318 & the larger LA 360 did you try both pans ?
