426 Hemi rebuild
« on: December 19, 2006 - 01:46:59 PM »
My Cuda has a 71 date code hemi in it.  I bought the car from a lady who could not give me any mechanical history on the car since the owner (her husband) had done most all of it himself and did not keep good records. Unfortunately, he passed away with cancer. Fortunately-she sold the car to me in 2003.

In 2500 miles of driving the car, it consumes about 1qt of oil per 500 miles, and smokes blue from both exhaust pipes upon moderate to hard accelleration.  So to spare you all the other commentary and speculation, I am taking it to a local speed shop yet this month to tear it down and inspect.

Until tear down, we will not know anything about the crank, cam, pistons, head components, etc.  I know it does have MP aluminum heads on it, Edel intake, 2-9000 Performer carbs, 2.25 headers and full 2.5" exhaust on it now. I mated it to a 5 speed Tremc last summer and 3.54 Dana 60 follows behind. The wheel dyno last spring peaked at a dissapointing 354hp.

If you were build this b%tch backup (with a limitless budget), how would you do it?  I am open to all opinions and links to websites.  Thanks in advance!!!

If it's putting out blue smoke on acceleration it's oil getting past the rings. Definately time for a rebuild.

...agreed-I did do a compression test myself and found #3 & 7 were below 75#.  I was also able to validate my heads need serious attention.

No, I am taking it to a pro (fortunately have local craftsman who builds over 300 LS1's and 2's for the sprint circuit).  In his "off-season", he built my 69 440-4 and recently completed a 360 Stroker for my 71 Demon that ended up with 471hp at the wheels.

I have never set a budget on any of the work he has done for me...and frankly, I want this 426 built to the max.  I do not care what it costs.  I will not add a supercharger or NOS-other than that, I am wide open.

If you want it done by the best, I hear Tim Banning at For Hemis Only is the guy to send it to. Lock, stock, and barrel. A hemi is not a normal engine. And rebuilding on properly is a specialized skill as far as I'm concerned. And I build quite a few engines..lol. The shipping is worth the peace of mind. If you're truely wanting to max it out, you may want to sell the iron block 426 and have Tim build a modern block much bigger...I cant imagine a '71 Hemi block will sit around long for sale...

I understand your point, Moper.  However, I am a bit reluctant replace the cast block with a new one simply because of all the work I have went to to make this a "correct clone".  The wheel setup, transmission and audio systems are all retro'd for my personal driving taste-all origional parts have been cleaned and stored for the future.  I seem to thnk that a correct, dated coded car will have higher value in the future.

I am totally confident of my current mechanic...what I am asking for is other's opinions and expiriences on the setup...or a "pick-list" if you will.  Like what combination of pistons, rods, lifters, cam, heads and why.

Here is the list of goodies in my Hemi engine and the resulting HP and torque figures.  The list isn't detailed, if you want any more info other than what is posted, PM me and I'll get it for ya:   :cooldancing:

I have a few Wicked cam grinds for streetable Hemis that have more than impressed my customers in the past
good quality machine works is the best place to start , plasma moly rings , balance the bottom end , 10:1 compression , I would look into a better intake & carb selection as well although it will be limited if you are still using the shaker hood , they do have an inline intake with wider spacing for 2 Holley 4 bbls , you would need to fabricate a different baseplate for the shaker to do this
