Master cylinder rubuild
« on: December 29, 2006 - 02:09:44 PM »
Looking for someone to rebuild my master cylinder. Everybody locally sends them out or wants to get me a replacement but I want to keep my original and just have it rebuilt. I don't mind sending it out just want it done right.
Any suggestions.

do it yourself , buy the seal kit , lightly hone the bore with a brake hone, clean all the parts & reassemble in the order it came out

Make sure that there is no pit marks especially around where seals sit. Throughly clean out any solvent with water and blow dry, rinse with metholated spirits. Use either rubber grease or brake fluid on bore and seals when reassembling. If you have front drum brakes both outlets will have check valves in them and will need to be replaced. If bore is pitted it will need to be resleeved or it will not hold pressure and will leak. If sleeving don't get a bronze sleeve, use stainlees steel.

If you don't want to do it yourself, and want a warranty on the rebuild, there are companies you can send it out to that will do it for you.  One place that comes to mind is White Post Restorations in VA.  They have a lifetime warranty on their rebuilds I think.
A lot cheaper to do it yourself if you can.  But in addition to just getting a rebuild kit and lightly honing the bore, you really want to clean it up really good.  All rust and crud needs to be cleaned out of the reservoirs or you will probably have your new seals get damaged fairly quickly.  Also it is good to get the casting media blasted, and then paint it with cast iron paint, or coat the exterior metal surfaces with a good rust preventative so it will look good after installation on your car. Be real careful about not getting any petroleum oil or solvent in the bore, outlets, or reservoir.  The EPDM seals used in brake systems are not compatible with petroleum and will be damaged if exposed to it.

Thanks guys.

I'm sure it would save me money to do it myself but I will want to get it blasted as well as rebuilt and with working 2 full time jobs to fund this project I just don't have the time.
