Liquor might have loosened my tongue,  but it also loosened the purse strings! Let's just say he "gave" me a fair price, well below cost, and is keen to help me restore the Cuda. Carl would have gladly given me the Cuda (he had more to drink than I!) but I insisted on paying for it. As my son doesn't have money to burn, this will help fund his '71 Cuda project.

Yupe, just so everybody is clear I didn't give him the Cuda. He paid for it, just, at a "mates rate".  :lol2:
I would have liked to but I need money for my 71 project and other bits and pieces. :)

Hey NZ, I  missed the thread where you discussed the gear vendors overdrive, what was the deal with it? I was thinking of getting one down the road as money allows but read something about you having problems with yours? Can you elaborate a little?

L-o-n-g story but in a nutshell, the GV kicks out of OD when it wants, it's a fault in it's module that GV's is supposedly fixing. I'm waiting on a replacement module, which GVs are making to fix this fault. Also, it's basically the whole system, I don't even use the gear splitting as IMO it's a complete waste of time. A stock TF-727 is quicker shifting. The shifts for the GV take anywhere from 2-5 seconds depending on rpm speed etc and how "it feels" so very sloppy and inconsistent. I only use OD (6th/4th) when I really have to, highway use and even then I have to use a custom button to hold it in so it won't kick out by itself. It's the worst mod or part I have ever purchased and given the chance I would buy a Keisler 5-Speed or adapt the A518 to suit the slap-stik linkage which won't be too hard and worth the hassle.

The GVs is an easy install, 2 days comfortably, a little banging to clear 1-1/2" underneath the tunnel and that's it, just the electric side. This is the autoshift sequencer unit the "new" one. The stock one is fine but you have to manually shift into and out of OD which takes practise and even then can not be smooth and perfect, something which GVs themselves fully admit and is the sole reason to making the autoshift unit, to rid this annoying lag. I was expecting NHRA style 6 short ratios and I guess I was hoping for too much because it's far from it. Basically it's a $2,500 extra OD gear....pretty expensive if you ask me. Gear splitting is just a gimmick, nothing more.

Sorry for the hi-jack Dad.

Well I guess I better stick with higher gears if I want smooth highway cruising because after reading that story I will not be looking at an overdrive setup from gear vendors  :puke:

Good decision. The worst part for me is, it's still ongoing....some $##K in R&D and must be close to 2 years now and it's still going.......definitely not fun. We've gone so far and spent so much it's just not worth throwing the towel in now. I'll get it working "hopefully" 100% and then just leave it at that. Oh well......what can you do but move on, learn from my mistakes and inform others, well, at least give them the chance of deciding for themselves.

I'd go a A518, perhaps get Terry (Transman) to build you one, I "heard" he was doing 25% off for CCC members. :grinno:
If you do a search here and on Google I think you can get it to work with the slap-stik and 100% with a cable type shifter.

:dunno:
