What amp alternator for Holley 950 Projection?
« on: September 02, 2006 - 01:44:01 AM »
Cuda will be fitted with Holley 950 Projection (throttle body injection) and I am in the process of getting an alternator for the car, so wondering whether anyone has this system and know what amperage alternator I'm going to need?  Cuda has a non-standard 40 amp one at the moment which won't be put back on the car and I can get a repro 50 amp one locally but not sure if this will be suitable?  Modern cars run around the 100amp mark alternators but I read an article the other day that warned that anything above 60 amps might burn out the original wiring?

60 amps is all the ammeter will take but not al the current needs to be routed through the ammeter , relays & shunts can be used to limit the load
Good luck with the projection , the systems I used were very unreliable lasting  about 2 weeks before the control box lost its mind & turned off a few injectors

Sorry to tell you this but the Projection system from Holley is JUNK. The only good part of the system is the throttle body.  Either get the Commander controller to hook up to the throtlle body, or get rid of it. Holley will not help you get it running. If you get it running, it will die repeatedly.  I sold my complete Projection on EBAY and had to bundle it with a laptop to get any money out of it. Since then, I bought the Holley Commander 950 for MFI and Edelbrock's Pro-Flow Fuel Injection. Edelbrock's system got me 22 miles per gallon while driving in the mountains during the 2006 Power Tour with my 440 Challenger.

YES!   The Holley COMMANDER is the GOOD one.

The Holley PRO-JECTION is the BAD one

HOW is the holley working out for you? Any gas mileage numbers? How is the cold-start?
Drive it like you stole it.

I have the Edelbrock system on my Challenger and got 22.5 MPG while up in the mountains in the 2006 Power Tour. I'm running an OD tranny though.    There are no cold start problems.  I start it and drive it just like my everyday cars.  No waiting for warm ups anymore.  My Holley Commander is still in the box.

Delays in the project hae meant that I'm no closer to installing the Holley TBI as yet.  Current thinking is to try and sell it though and go with a carby as the car will no longer be a daily driver.  I have since been advised that the cost of setting up the TBI with new return lines, fuel pumps and having to run the engine in on a carby in the first place make it restrictive to go ahead with it (even if I cant sell it, a carby will cost less than the install or so I'm advised).

With it being 2007 now, It'll be worth your time to get the Fuel injection going.  Break your engine in with the carb, then get everything else up and running.   Then one day, take a stab at installing the fuel injection. After the tuning stage, it'll be just like your other everyday driver.   Anybody can tune a carb these days.
