How black is black ?
« on: January 05, 2007 - 09:52:57 AM »
If I decide to paint my Challenger black, how important do you think it is to get the correct Mopar color ?  My concern is two-fold.  1.  Is there much visual difference between blacks ( if I park next to a Mopar with the correct paint, will it be that far off ? )  2.  Is there much of a price difference between blacks, assuming you're talking base / clear  to  base / clear ?

Actually there is a difference in blacks, some of the codes are 9000,9300,9700, these are all black. Some codes are just black mixing base/toner others have a small amount of a second or third color in the mix.
The prep and final sanding/buffing is what makes or breaks a black paint job.
As far as important to matching other cars I don't think anyone will ever notice a color tone difference other than a color trained paint pro. Most people will be looking for body straightness and depth.
There is almost no price difference in different blacks. The price difference comes between different paint lines (DCC,DBU,DBC,MBC ECT.)

I love black e-body cars. I bought my car already restored, I can't tell you what paint was used. But I think the key element with black is the final wet sanding, buffing and polishing.

Good question Keith, most think black is one colour. lol  I know when I go to shows or see two black cars together, both being "black", you can definitely tell which one is the pure black car & which one looks more "grey".

To help in your question, I'm not sure if you'll be able to tell the difference between a Mopar shade vs a non-Mopar shade (in black). Being black, most, if not all people would only be able to tell which shade is lighter. Sublime & plum crazy cars etc are easier to tell if they have gone up a tone/shade but black? Be hard to tell. If I were you, I'd just go for the deepest darkest black on the market and show up the other cars at shows. Black is black & black is bad and if you're going for that bad a$ look, then do it right.  :naughty: :smokin: Pretty much they same for my Challenger, Lucy, I wanted White but not Mopar white as it appears more creamy in person and screen. So, I went with Bright White, one of the brightest on the market, glad I did too.
