Flat tappet cams are only oiled by splash. The pressurized oil is for the hydraulic lifters, so a little dribbles around them, but not much. What comes off the heads runs down the valley and doesnt hit the lobes. So that leaves the crank windage. The reason they say "keep it at X rpm" is to make sure there's enough oil flying around to keep the lobes well oiled while they wear in. Idle time is not good. Any rpm about about 1800 will fling a bunch of oil up on them. I like to start it, rev it to abour 2000 using the idle speed screw, let it run a few minutes, then bring it up to around 3-3500, then slowly back down to 2000. Do that a few times, and I keep the running time to about 10 minutes. I do that, check for leaks, loose clampos, etc, the fire it back up again for another round of about 10-15 minutes. Then while it's hot, I drop the oil and filter, replace with fresh stuff, and let it cool. Try not to let it idle much for the first few times you run it. After it's cooled, I swap in the innner springs (if needed), check head fastener torque, I warm it up again, reset the vlave lash (if needed) and she's ready to run. I currently use Car Quest 15-40 fleet oil with Comp's additive. I'll probably stay with those.
