axle shafts set-up problem
« on: January 18, 2007 - 11:23:58 AM »
1974 challenger rallye 8.3/4

I've pressed green bearings on each shaft and installed them, but when I bolt TIGHT (to specs) the axles shafts, they become harder to move and both rotate in the same direction (don't have limited slip), also the yoke rotates.

On the other hand, if I loosen up the bolts a little, it seems to work ok.. if move one axle forward the other moves backwards.

I have read about the shafts end up being a bit too long when the green bearings are installed but I'm not sure if this might be the problem or there's something in the carrier (489 with new 3.55) that needs to me taken out.

other question would be, what is correct "behavior" of the axles once it is all put together and tighted, because knowing that, I can be sure that it is all set correctly.

I, have not put lube on the case, until i'm sure it's ok and that I don't have to disassemble again.

thanks for the help, I'm new in the forum, soon will post pictures and the progress on this full restoration 74 challenger.

I have run into this with green brgs , oyu have 2 choices either cut a slight amount off the end of the axle or disassemble the carrier & remove the spacer block

hi, thanks Chryco for the response,  :2thumbs:

so from the two solutions you propose two q's arise:

1.- How much is enough to cut the axles? (have read .020 others .050), one or both axles? ... any consecuenses if cut to much?

2.- Is this the spacer you talk about? (red arrow in the picture), just take that out and ready to go?

last but not least.. what would be the best "test" or "check list" to determine that everything is ok, before further assembly?

if you trim off too much on the axle ends it will make no difference , the spline is fully engauged it it just comes rigth through the side gear to hit the spacer block
the spacer block is the item with the red arrow pointed to it , but it requires the ring gear case top be removed & disassembled to remove it
as long as the diff was ok before the green brgs you only need to be sure the flange on the brg  is seating fully against the axle housing with no side load , the way I would check this is remove the gaskets & bolt in th eaxles and make sure thay are flush , the added gasket will provide extra clearance

 Welcome BTW
