My header was damaged slightly. It's really SMC, or a type of polyester resin, similar to fiberglass.

Fiberglass is easy to repair, the only troubel is allighnment if the panel is split.

I don't have any problem " Ruining " a header panel, only beace you can find them pretty easily, as  everyone is focused on the 70 & 71. Personally, your idea of incorporating the "new" Challenger grille and the old header panel is a very worthy idea. I had discussed this with my friends at work previously. They too, liked the idea.

I will attempt to see what CAN work.

I wanted to replace my header pannel but shipping was always a killer when you added it to the cost.

I have a small piece that was pulled out of the bottom edge (where the bumper filler screws into the end), and a fracture between two buckets that goes all the way down.

I have a guy that I feel can do a good job, and will try to have mine repaired...would rather have just replaced it...but...

Brace it first, then just carve out a valley at the crack site, and reinforce with F/G. Sand and apply filler done. The kids go home happy.

On another note, I got a hold of a Dodge Charger grille today, and I will measure/find the difference between the two and post my results.

Then there's this new one.....
