Interior door panels
« on: November 11, 2002 - 03:56:53 PM »
I have a 73 cuda that i'm restoring, the interior panels in the car have been painted over by a different color than the original color. I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to remove the paint without damaging the plastic, or a way to repaint them.
thanks

A company called SEM makes sprayable vinyl dye. You can get it at any automotive paint supplier. It sprays on with a paint gun. Treat your panels with a plastic or vinyl prep before you spray.

;D ;D Try using some lacquer thinner on some clean cloths to remove residual paint. Use outside, wear rubber gloves, good ventilation. Use only enough thinner to dampen the cloth--NOT SOAKING WET. This will allow you to remove the paint and won't damage the plastic. Go slow and check your progress. I have used this process on seat backs that were painted and it worked great. Good luck. ;D ;D

I've got a set of interior panels, three black and one brown, that I want to change to blue.  The salesman said I needed to know what kind of plastic the panels are made of in order to get the correct SEM products to prep them for spraying the dye.  Are they made of ABS plastic or some other type?

;) My best guess is they have to be ABS. The only real test would be to shave a little bit off, and see if it smokes when heated with a soldering iron or something hot. I would REALLY be surprised if they weren't ABS.
