Anybody ever fixed a cracked #2 main (block)?
« on: February 05, 2007 - 05:36:26 PM »
I'm sick about it...I found a date coded HP 383 and it turns out the #2 main is cracked.  The machine shops around here aren't very interested in fixing it.  The crack is right in the middle around the oil drip hole into the bearing area.  The main shop thinks the main spun and did it.  There were also two spun rods so the crank is junk and I'd say it probably was run out of oil or lost oil pressure at some point to cause this.

Probably a hopeless cause but thanks for looking anyway.

I saw a 69 383hp and a 70 hp383 on the bay last night. Same guy and he said can hear run. 450 for 1 and 500 for the other. They were both buy now's.  I looked in your personal info and didnt see where you were for a location. I was in ebay motors and typed in big block dodge. That's how I found it.

Thanks for the tip and it turns out I'm in the same state as him too but it's not an HP motor (all I care about are the stamps and date code).

Steve,

What a pisser.  Lemme see what I have tomorrow for money-I probably won't be able to do much more than what I promised you at the beginning of all this, but I may be able to go a little past that.  I'm currently unemployed...

Thanks grosum.  If you can send me back what we agreed and more when you are able that would be great - and above and beyond.  Said it before, will say it again, great member to deal with.

My guess is, the block cracked first. It's not that uncommon accross the main saddles. You could also find a date coded std block, and have it decked during the rebuild. That removes the HP stampings unles the shop has the right equipment. There was no difference in block materials or design for non HP and HPs.

Neil, I just saw this morning you're a grosum :roflsmiley:.   I wanna send you some money by pay pal to help out right when you get this. I will pay extra for the fee...Contact me. My plate is full right now with job duties and doctors, so I can't make the trip to montgomery, but I super need to pick up the manifolds, I'll be cranking the 6pk engine about as soon as I get them....ALAN
