I'm doing a very experimental work with my dash pad which was badly cracked from several places and the whole top side was wery brittle. I've started with thin layer of fiberglass on the areas where the old vinyl is brittle and also filled up the cracks and other imperfections with the same stuff (ok, actually my gf is doing that job. I'm playing with the welder
). After we get it sanded smooth and the shape right we will wrap a new vinyl over it with contact glue (already got the thin vinyl and the glue. Glue is supposed to withstand temperatures up to 92 celcius). Ofcourse it isn't soft anymore from the places where the fiberglass is but with the real vinyl over the fiberglass it should feel much more original than those plastic caps and yet be much more cheaper than redone with ultimate dashes etc (if you don't count a hourly salary for your own work
).
This might end up in
but I decided to try atleast. I'll get one of those plastics pads if I can't get the vinyl stretched good enough over the original shape. I'm going to post some pics on my restopage here when I have time to update it.
Anyone ever done something similar?
