Ammeter Specs
« on: February 09, 2007 - 01:34:24 PM »
Does anyone have any technical specs on the dash ammeters? Not that it should be different, but I have a 1970 with the rallye dash. I'm looking for any electrical information about the gauge.

Does anyone know the correct resistor to make it into a voltmeter? If you take an ammeter and put a resistor (with the proper resistance) in series with it, you can ground one side and put the other on a switched power source and have a voltmeter. You just need the proper resistance which is based on the sensitivity of the original ammeter.

Anyone try this?

I completely put all new autometer phantom gauges in my car...got rid of the ammeter and put in a volt meter...there is a wire on each side of the ammeter and all I did was wire those 2 together and take out the ammeter guage and wire up a volt meter per autometer instructions...real easy!!!

I hear you on that one, but I want to try to keep the stock gauges. And i don't want to cut up the amp gauge to retrofit a voltmeter in there.

Anyway, I'm interested to see what your dash looks like. Can you post a pic?

I recently checked with redline gauges out of so cal as this was a concern for me also. Right now I have by-passed the amp gauge at the bulkhead but consequently there is no reading on the cluster. Redline makes a conversion to volt meter that supposedly looks stock for around a hundred dollars. Have not torn into the my dash yet and sent it in though. If you do go this route please let us know how it turns out.
