A person can make what they want of these types of charts, which can be deceiving.  You need to consider that these tax rates are a percentage of income.  To be fair, you need to consider everything - Job opportunities, housing cost, real estate appreciation...

My home state of Michigan is 16th for state/local, and 19th overall.  About what I expected. 
"Red" Nebraska is 6th for state/local, and drops to 22nd when you include federal.  In a similar way, "Blue" Hawaii is 5th for state/local, but drops to 17th when you include federal.  Poor Massachusetts has state/local taxes that are 28th, but when you include federal taxes, they jump to 6th!

I think it is an over-simplification to think you can draw political conclusions from this.   

 

It is somewhat deceiving.NH has no sales or income tax,only a meals tax so most of the tax revenue is by real estate taxes,90% of which goes to school funding and we have no kids!    Lucky me, I work in Mass. so I also pay a Mass income tax-taxation without representation.

....and that's only part of the story.  I live in Florida which ranks 39/21 depending on which way you want to look at it.  What you don't see is the insurance costs.  My house insurance, which is considered low, will be $4200 this year!!!  And I haven't had a storm/hurricane claim since Hurricane Andrew (and the eyes of Katrina and Wilma both went right over my house).

As JCW indicated before, do your homework before you move - it may save you a lot in the long run.

Must be nice to consider stuff like that....up here to your north temperature is the number one reason to move for me. If I told you about our high taxes, pst, gst, income tax, alcohol tax and gas tax, and told you it's -40 out right now, you would think I need my head checked for stayin here....wait a minute, why do I live here???
