Close-up hemi orange pic needed
« on: February 23, 2007 - 06:26:48 PM »
I'm not sure if hemi orange is the color or if vitamin C is the color I saw on a car...I thought it was hemi orange until I saw a very very VERY small amount of metallic in it giving it almost a pearlescent look to it when you look closely.  Anyone have some close up paint pics of both colors? :worshippy

You probably won't be able to tell from pics because a lighter color car can look dark if the lighting is poor, and vise-versa.  In fact, Dodge Hemi Orange and Plymouth Tor Red are the same color.  When the light isn't so good, Hemi Orange looks red.  Hemi Orange is darker than Vitamin C.  They were both extra-cost high-impact colors, so I believe they both have metal flakes - I know for sure Hemi orange does.  One clue may be the year of the car you saw.  Vitamin C is 1970 only (and 1969-1/2 Road Runners).  Hemi orange was 1970 (and 1969-1/2 Super Bees), 1971 and 1972.  If the car you saw was 1971 or later, and painted correctly, it could only be Vitamin-C if it was a special order paint car.

I've owned both and I don't think Vitamin C orange has any metalic in it at all. My 70 Cuda us Hemi orange or tora red and you can see the bright metallic in the paint up close in the sun real easy. I don't have any pictures of both but the Vitamin C looked more yellow when you see the 2 colors side by side. Here is a picture of my 70 painted tora red.

I was originally going to paint my 71 cuda tor red until I found out that it had metallic in it (I wanted to paint the car a solid color). Unless you are looking close you don't really notice the metallic. According to the paint store, there is a silver metallic in the paint, but it goes unnoticed for the most part due to a large amount of white in the paint to cover it up. Also if when painted too many coats are applied the car will turn out red instead of orange, and like stated earlier under certain lighting conditions the color does appear to be red.

Back when I owned an automotive paint store, we would re-create the high impact colors using white pearl instead of the white and metallic toners. Had to play with it a little, but it looked great.
