8 3/4 Centersections..???

Is there a difference in the rear axel centersection, depending on the housing...

I see Mancini saying for "489" OR "742"...  I have change about 45 C.S.  , - never knowing it migth not fit... :clueless:

Won't any chump go into any housing..???

All center sections will interchange.  The differences between the number 9 housing and the number 2 housing are internal parts.

yep,
The 8 & 3/4 center sections will all interchange. The 489 case is supposed to be the strongest, but some will debate that too. It's not actually the case from one to the other that is stronger, but the pinion shaft & in the way it is made (diameter, taper ect) that makes one stronger than the other.

The 489 having the crush sleeve makes the 742 the strongest. If you go to a solid spacer and eliminate the crush sleeve on the 489 then in my opinion it is the strongest.

Cowboy.  Is this for street or race?  Are you leaving the center section stock?  If it is for stock street use, either one, #2 or #9 should be fine.

The primary difference is in the diameter of  the pinion gear shaft. If forget the exact dimensions, but it goes something like this; the 751 case is 1 5/8", the 742 is 1 3/4". Both use a flat washer to set pinion depth so they are perceived as being able to withstand a greater shock load. The 489 case uses a 1 7/8" diamter pinion and a tapered crush sleeve to set depth. The taperd sleeve makes it easier to set up since you don't have to disassembled it to replace washers while setting preload, but high rpm launches can also slowly crush the sleeve and eventually lead to the pinion depth being incorrect, whoch could lead to a rear end failure. There are solid spacers available for 489 to use in place of the crush sleeve. Gear selections for 751 cases is limited to what ever  you can find on Ebay as no one makes gears for them anymore. For a mild street applciation, mild being up to 400 horse, any of them would work fine.
