New dash pad- any tricks to installing my vin tag?
« on: February 28, 2007 - 09:01:17 PM »
The biggest reason I havent installed my new dash is I am unsure if I can take the vin off my old dash and install it without hurting it.

I am not sure how to go about doing this.  Are there people out there that know how to do it correctly?  Can I just pop rivet it on? what size rivets? I actually thought about just putting it in the console. Do body shops have a way of re installing them?

On the underside of the pad, cut off the bulge of the rivet. I used a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel in it. Then the vin will pull off with the original rivets in place.

Install: Epoxy it in place in the new dash. Make 2 dents in the vin pocket for the rivets to fit into, so that it fits flush.

The other option is to try and hunt down original rivots and then you can just drill out your old rivots and use new ones. The problem is that the correct rivots are hard to come by. Here is a set I found on ebay

What I did was get a dremil put one of those thin cutting wheels in it and very carfully put a cross cut in the back of the rivet down to the dash pad then squeeze the legs of the rivet together with good tweezers and carefully push them out, they will come out in one piece with the tops undamaged,to replace tag and rivets on the new dash pad just glue the bottom of the tag and put rivets in and bend the legs of rivets out and they will stay in with a bit of glue on their bent legs, hope this helps, it worked for me and looks original.

Another option is to take a standard pop rivet and put it in the jaws of a drill chuck then tighten the chuck just enough to make three indentations on the edge of the rivet, the open the chuck and turn the rivet a little and do it again to make 3 more indentations. You can then paint the rivet black and ther you go! Believe it or not, this trick was shown to me by an instructor at an auto theft class I attended several years back. With a little practice you would be surprised how good these look compared to the factory rivets.
